2016 HOF Doris Hieden #43

Doris Hieden

Doris Hieden was inducted into the THPA Hall of Fame in 2016 becoming the 43rd Member to be inducted.

Doris was an active Member of the Bastrop Horseshoe Club and worked really hard with Gene Meyer & Tommy Valenta to keep the Club up & running. She maintained continuous membership through 1999. During this tenure, she won her first State Championship in 1996. After a few years away from the game, Doris rejoined the THPA in 2010 and continues to be an active THPA Member, Advocate for the THPA, and Championship Competitor.

As an active Member of the THPA and the Bryan Club, Doris has actively recruited new members, participated in League, and served as Tournament Director. In the Bryan League, she is always achieving the High Game, High Ringer Average, and usually the League Champion, even though the League uses a 100% Handicap. Doris has won several NHPA League Awards for being on the National Top 10 List.

As an advocate for the THPA, last year Doris got an old list of Members, compared it to the current list, and made phone calls trying to get past Members to come back and pitch or at least find out why they quit. This year Doris did a Radio Interview promoting Horseshoe Pitching and the Bryan Club on the KEOS Radio Station. She was able to get Bryan’s League Night added to the Bryan Parks Event Calendar, so that anyone looking at it will know they can meet other Horseshoe Pitchers at Haswell Park on Thursday nights. Additionally, Doris had Bryan Horseshoe Club business cards printed with the Bryan Club’s Website & Contact information on them to pass out to promote the Bryan Club.

On behalf of the THPA, Doris contacted President George H. Bush’s Secretary to invite President Bush to attend the Opening Ceremony of the 2016 State Singles Tournament. President Bush was an avid Horseshoe Pitcher and a member of the THPA Hall of Fame. President Bush was unable to attend, but did send a Representative to attend the Opening Ceremony. President Bush’s Hall of Fame jacket is on display at his Presidential Library to help draw interest in our Sport.
